VirtueMart, Joomla's prime free component for running a shop, has just released its newest version, 1.1.0. VirtueMart is a solid eCommerce component, and this new release is stable and it works natively with Joomla 1.5. The full list of features for this new version is available here.
This article by Coding Horror detailing some of Wordpress's performance flaws has received a lot of attention recently. The Wordpress Digg effect mentioned in the article is a real problem, and what seems to tick most people is the Wordpress developers' dismissal of the issue. See also Daring Fireball.

Magento is a new open source e-commerce platform with great promise. So far, open source e-commerce solutions have been few and problematic. It's driven by PHP/MySQL and it offers something that all e-commerce customers crave: one-page checkout. Worth a shot.
